Toilets fail in two ways: no water to flush, or nowhere for the flush to go. Plan for both without romance.
If the loo still drains
A bucket of stored water will flush a toilet that still drains. Do not waste drinking water on it if grey water from washing will do. Flush less often. Keep a plunger and know where the manhole is, without turning yourself into the water company.
If the sewer is flooded or the street is telling you not to flush, believe it. A flooded drain inside the house is an emergency of floors and illness, not an inconvenience.
If you cannot flush
A camping toilet, a sturdy bucket with a seat, and absorbent material or bags is a known, dull solution. Double-bag, keep it vented and lidded, and store it outside the kitchen. Lime or cat litter knocks down smell; it is not magic. Have enough liners for two weeks before you think you are finished.
Hand washing beside that bucket is part of the toilet, not a later project. A water container with a tap and a bar of soap on a rope will do. Log the whole set under Sanitation so it is not forgotten behind the food.
Privacy and children
People will avoid a grim toilet until they are unwell. Put it somewhere dignified, with a light and a hook for paper. Tell children the plan in daylight, once, without a speech. Toilet paper stores well; store it. A washable bidet bottle of treated water reduces how much paper you need.
